Environmental Protection
The rising concentration of greenhouse gases is causing the earth‘s atmosphere to heat up, hence also leading to permafrost melting.
We take our responsibility for the environment seriously and focus on reducing our CO2 emissions. We have had a net zero carbon footprint at the Hannover location since 2016.
The burning of coal accounts for around half of annual CO2 emissions. Starting in 2018 we have therefore made a conscious decision not to invest in issuers who generate a quarter or more of their turnover from coal mining and coal-based energy generation.
Digitalisation
Experts expect the cyber markets to triple in size by 2020.
In the (re)insurance industry a particularly massive growth surge has been seen among insurtechs. We leverage the benefits of cooperations with what are often small start-up firms to pursue various objectives, including the cultivation of new customer groups.
In 2017 we joined the B3i Blockchain Insurance Industry Initiative. The goal is to structure the digital sharing of information among insurers and reinsurers even more efficiently.
We formulated our first digitalisation strategy in response to the opportunities and risks associated with both digitalisation and automation.
Climate Change
Developing countries in vulnerable climate zones are particularly exposed to increasing impacts from extreme weather events such as heat waves or windstorms.
Heat waves can lead to crop failures. New technologies such as remote sensing satellite systems enable us to develop parametric covers and hence offer protection against the effects of climate change.
In our internal position papers, such as those on the topics of climate-related catastrophe events and climate protection liability, we monitor the opportunities and risks associated with climate change and factor them into our underwriting.
Demographic Change
The global community is growing rapidly, ageing and becoming more diverse.
We cater to the worldwide trend towards an increasing average age with our range of longevity products and assure both financial security and stable, high-quality health care provision to an advanced age.
We respond to the change in the age structure and diversity of our workforce by taking various steps to improve cooperation between new employees and veteran staff.
Social and Financial Integration
Roughly 60% of the world‘s population has no access to suitable insurance products.
By offering micro- and agricultural insurance products, we contribute to social development in structurally deprived regions. Individuals with scant financial resources are able to obtain protection against the risks associated with natural perils such as catastrophic events or crop failures.
We play an active part in projects supported by the InsuResilience initiative of the G7 countries and thereby work towards providing insurance protection against climate risks for poor and vulnerable people in developing countries.
The considerable degree of diversity in the workforce is one of the cornerstones of our successful business activities. Some 40 different nationalities are employed at the Hannover location alone.
